The Euro Summer School on exotic beams is supported by the European commission, human potential program, high-level scientific conferences (HPCF-2001-00101-01).

Dear colleague,

We would like to inform you that the next EURO SUMMER SCHOOL ON EXOTIC BEAMS will be held September 12th - 20th, 2002. It is intended for PhD students and young post-docs who are working or interested in the field of nuclear physics with radioactive ion beams. This year's school covers many aspects of modern nuclear physics focused on radioactive beams ranging from the shell model theory to the applications of lasers for nuclear physics subjects. Moreover, the school offers lectures on other related and currently important topics. It also provides unique possibilities for meetings between established scientists and young people who just started their career. There will be six main lectures each lasting four times 45 min. Additionally, three special topics are dealt with. Some time is foreseen for students' oral (10+5 min) or poster presentations.

Main lectures (4 x 45 min):
W. Catford (Surrey, United Kingdom): Reaction studies with exotic nuclei
W. Kutschera (Vienna, Austria): Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
A. Poves (Madrid, Spain): The nuclear shell model
R. Neugart (Mainz, Germany): Lasers in nuclear physics
K. Hübner (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland): Accelerators: Physics and Technology
P. Van Duppen (Leuven, Belgium): Decay studies of exotic nuclei
Special topics:
A. Blondel (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland): Neutrino physics
R. Landua (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland): Anti-matter
J. Gillies (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland): The public awareness of science

It is the ninth school in a series that originated in Leuven. Last year the school started to travel in Europe by being organized in Jyvaskyla/Finland. It is funded by the European commission within the fifth framework program for improving human research potential by the support of high-level scientific conferences (ref.: HPCF-2001-00101-01).

The school will take place partly at CERN and partly at the "Ecole de Physique" in Les Houches. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is situated near Geneva on the border between France and Switzerland. One day of lectures will be hosted at CERN followed by visits to ISOLDE and CERN in general. The "Ecole de Physique", perched above Les Houches, a small village in the French Alps close to Chamonix and about 80 km from Geneva, is the venue for the main part of the school. It is a French institution whose major aim is to stimulate exchange within the international scientific community while contributing to the development of scientific research in France. Due to its beautiful setting on the edge of woods and meadows it is the ideal place not only for hiking but also for intense scientific discussions and contacts, thus, the ideal place for a very interesting and stimulating EURO SUMMER SCHOOL ON EXOTIC BEAMS 2002.

A fee of 250€ will be charged for registration to the school and 399€ for accommodation. Everybody who is a national of an EU member or associated state is entitled to apply for supported participation before the application deadline, 1st of June 2002. Applications should be submitted via the form on our web page or, in exceptional cases, via e-mail. To keep the character of this school and due to the limitations of the place the number of students is limited to 55.
